These Masala Crackers made with Almond Flour are gluten-free and oil-free, making them a terrific snack. They go nicely with hummus, pesto, tzatziki, and other dips since they’re spiced with Indian spices.

Do you have an issue with snacking? I certainly do! I feel like I’m always nibbling, and it has a lot to do with the fact that I’m always in the kitchen. I don’t nibble as much on days when I’m not in the kitchen.

On recipe testing or photography days, though, I invariably go for a package of cookies or chips. It’s impossible to say no! I’ve been trying to eat healthier snacks, so I developed this recipe for Masala Crackers made with Almond Flour a few months ago, which I’m thrilled to share with you.

I’ve made it at least ten times in the previous several months and it’s helped me feel better about my snacking habits. It’s produced from scratch, with no added sugar or oil, and no preservatives.

The nicest thing about this dish is how simple it is to prepare. All you have to do now is mix everything together, which will take around 5 minutes. That’s the dough, which you next lay out and bake. Although baking these crackers takes some time (more on that below), making the dough just takes 5 minutes. So there are no more excuses for not making masala crackers!

Why Do We Enjoy This Recipe?

This is now my favorite snack, and there are multiple reasons for it!

  • Works for a variety of dietary choices, including low-carb and keto!

I have a large jar full of these crackers right now. As a result of the several batches, I tested this recipe several times before releasing it on the blog. But I’m not complaining since I like a crunchy, savory snack, particularly around tea time (which, by the way, occurs much more often than I’d like to confess these days)!

Keto Mathri in the Oven

Sarvesh compares them to mathri, which in some ways they are, since they are seasoned with the same spices as traditional mathri, such as ajwain and kasuri methi. As a result, you might compare them to baked gluten-free mathri or low-carb/keto mathri!

Ingredients

To create these Masala Crackers made with Almond Flour, you only need a few ingredients.

Almond flour: We’ll need fine Almond Flour for this recipe. Use almond flour instead of almond meal, which is coarsely crushed almonds (with skin).

Flaxseed meal: I used ground flaxseeds, also known as flaxseed meal, to bind the dough (because there is no gluten). Flaxseed meal may be purchased at grocery shops, or whole flaxseeds can be ground in a spice grinder (this is what I do).

Spices: Because they are masala crackers, I flavored them with ajwain (carom seeds), turmeric, and kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves). You are free to use whatever spices you choose.

Baking Time & Thickness of Crackers

The recipe is really simple to follow. However, the baking time must be kept in mind. It will mostly rely on the cracker thickness. They will either be too crisp (under-baked) or burn if you don’t bake them for the correct period of time (over-baked). The core of the cracker should not be mushy when done; it should be firm. Every oven is different, but this is what I’ve found to work with mine (and I have tested it several times). As a result, I’m providing you rough timings; please modify as necessary for your oven.

Note: Because the crackers on the borders cook faster than those in the middle, you may wish to remove them first and then finish baking the crackers in the center.

1/6-inch thickness: I rolled these crackers to a thickness of 1/6 inch using my rolling pin, which comes with these measurement rings that make rolling all of the dough equally a breeze. These crackers are wonderful somewhere between 30 and 33 minutes at 350 F degrees for 1/6-inch thickness.

1/8-inch thickness: If you roll them out to 1/8-inch thickness, they’ll be done in about 25 minutes.

1/4-inch thickness: depending on how thick you roll them, it may take anywhere from 35 to 40 minutes.

Instructions in Detail

1- Combine 1 cup almond flour and 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal in a large mixing bowl.

2- Next, add the spices: 1/4 teaspoon turmeric, 1 teaspoon crushed kasuri methi, and 1/8 teaspoon red chili powder (or add more if you prefer spicy). Add 1/4 + 1/8 teaspoon salt as well. Using a whisk, combine all of the ingredients.

3- Add 3 tbsp. water and stir well with your hands.

4- Mix everything together, the dough will be a bit moist at this point (not too wet though). Cover the bowl with a plate and set aside for 5 minutes to aid in the absorption of the water by the almond flour and flaxseed meal. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

5- Remove the dough from the ball and set it on a piece of parchment paper after 5 minutes.

6- Cover the dough with another layer of parchment paper. Then roll the dough to a thickness of 1/6 inch using a rolling pin (I used one with thickness rings, which makes it really simple to roll to the required thickness). Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut into 2 inch squares.

7- Place the crackers on top of the parchment paper on the baking sheet.

8- Bake for 30 to 33 minutes at 350 degrees F, or until the crackers are browned and crispy. Because the ones on the outside bake quicker than the ones in the middle, check them at the 25-minute mark and remove them if they are becoming too brown. When the crackers are done, they should be totally crisp; if the middle feels squishy, they require extra time. Once they’ve cooled, gently separate them.

If You Don’t Have Enough Crispy Crackers

The baking time will vary depending on the thickness of the crackers, as previously stated. If the crackers aren’t crispy after cooling, return them to the oven and bake for a few more minutes.

Variations in Seasoning

To flavor these crackers, I used spices like turmeric, ajwain, and chili powder. Other spices may also be used. Here are several examples:

  • seeds of sesame
  • powdered onion
  • powdered garlic
  • rosemary, dried

You may easily omit the spices and make simple crackers with salt and herbs instead.
