Southeast Asia is known for its use of natural remedies, some of which have dubious effects and some of which are now used worldwide. Ginseng and ginger, for example, have been used for centuries in Asia to improve health and well-being and are now widely used around the world.

Another healthy drink is our refreshing tropical fruit punch or perhaps another calorie-free soft drink recipe, cold brewed green jasmine tea or a pandan leaf based drink common in Thailand.

What is the official name for butterflies?

Papilionaceae have many different names. The official name of the plant is Clitoria ternatea. It is also known as blue pea and Asian pigeonpea and is a very common healthy drink in Southeast Asia.

Naturally growing butterfly tea

It is a climbing plant that grows easily in Southeast Asia, especially in Thailand and Vietnam, where it is used for beverages and as a food coloring. Blue pea flowers are used to make blue flower tea.

The flowers are also dried and readily available in most countries. You can use dried butterfly flowers (available here) or fresh flowers to make the tea.

If you look at each of these beautiful flowers, you will understand the femininity of the first part of their formal name – but let’s not go into details.

What is butterfly tea?

Butterfly Pea is a beverage obtained by steeping the flowers of the butterfly pea plant in hot water, in the same way that ordinary tea is steeped to obtain tea. It can be drunk hot or cold and is regularly served in Thai hotels and upscale massage parlors.

If you use fresh flowers, be sure to remove the stalk and green leaves because if you leave them on, the tea will taste a little bitter.

If you are using dried flowers, you can skip this step.

Hang in there and be surprised, but don’t leave the flowers too long or the taste will become strong and less pleasant – just like regular tea becomes strong if it sits in the teapot too long!

What are the benefits of butterfly tea?

Blue tea has many health benefits, the best known of which are antioxidants and a balance that calms the digestive system.

Many people find that blue tea slightly boosts energy levels and increases alertness. For me it is better to drink it ice cold, but maybe that is because it is very hot in Thailand, at least where I live, in the middle of the country!

The flowers contain catechins, which are believed to speed up metabolism and help burn fat by increasing calories.

Besides the beautiful, addictive blue color of the drink, many people find that it also helps to improve mood.

Like green tea and regular tea, this drink is a mild diuretic that helps your urinary system get rid of excess water and may help reduce anxiety and regulate blood sugar, but there isn’t enough scientific evidence to confirm this yet.

How many cups of butterfly blossom tea can you drink per day?

Butterfly blossom tea contains no caffeine, so it avoids what regular tea and, even worse, coffee do, making it the best alternative.

But, like anything, it must be consumed in moderation. I drink 3-5 glasses a day as part of my water intake because it’s kind of boring to just drink water all day.

In Thailand, the drink is served in hotel receptions, spas and massage parlors, is served after meals and added to various dishes. You will see that it is widely used.

I stress that I am not a doctor and have no medical training, but I can tell you that the general consensus is that 3-5 stitches per day or less is normal.

Anyway, variety is the spice of life, right?

  • Boil water in a pan.
  • If using fresh flowers, while waiting for the water to boil, prepare the butterfly pea flowers by cutting off the green underside. If you use dried flowers, you can use them as they come.
  • When the water is boiling, turn off the gas, pour in the flowers and put the lid on the pan. Let the water stand for 5 minutes without heating it further (if you continue to boil the water, you will get a bitter taste).
  • When the 5 minutes are up, the tea concentrate turns into a pot.
  • While still warm, add honey and brown sugar and stir until dissolved (you can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less to taste).
