Chinese Five Spice Roasted Chicken

This simple is a dish that was born out of necessity in my house. I love fresh meat in my diet, but when I travel to China, I am often unable to buy fresh meat. I remember this is always a problem when I’m in China because of their high meat prices. I have always wanted to have a recipe that I can make when I’m in a hurry or need something quick for dinner, so I came up with this simple roasted chicken dish.

Chinese Five Spice Roasted Chicken is a recipe that I’ve made many times for my family, because it is really delicious. This chicken dish is cooked in an oven, but the taste is so much better when you cook it in the oven. I have already posted a version of this recipe in my blog, but this time I have prepared the recipe in a different way. The reason I have used this recipe is because my family loves it so much. The spices are so well blended together in the chicken that you really cannot taste them, that is why it tastes so delicious.

Star aniseed (), fennel seeds (), cloves (), Sichuan peppercorn () and Chinese cinnamon () are the five fundamental components for Chinese five spice powder. Other spices may be added based on the five fundamental components, depending on the recipe. In reality, there are around 13 commonly used Chinese spices in Chinese cuisine. This recipe is actually a variation on a style of chicken I call “Chinese Five Spice Roasted Chicken”. The spice blend is a mixture of five spices that are used in Chinese cooking- Sichuan pepper, ground fennel seed, star anise, cloves, and cinnamon. I’ve found that this type of spice mixture actually gives chicken meat a hint of sweetness..
