This tofu stir-fry dish in a spicy soy sauce with ginger and garlic is a stir-fry recipe I use when I’m in a hurry or don’t feel like cooking much. I promise you these tofu fries are way better than an Asian takeaway! It’s tasty and comforting and you’ll have a delicious protein meal ready in no time!

Cooking Asian dishes at home doesn’t take many hours, and you can also make most of these dishes healthier at home. This dish was originally made with meat, but I wanted to make it vegetarian and vegan, so I made this dish with vegan tofu.

Tofu with Thai basil, fried

A delicious blend of soy sauce and sweet chili sauce gives it a spicy, savory flavor. A little honey gives this curry a sweet and spicy aroma and a tasty taste.

Ingredients

Extra firm tofu: I used regular tofu, which is excellent for baking or stir-frying.

Expenses : Pepper, Thai basil, fresh garlic, ginger, raw mango, honey.

Condiments and seasonings for sauces: Chili paste, soy sauce, black pepper, salt, sweet chili sauce, roasted peanuts, cilantro.

Oil: Canola oil is best for this recipe.

Tofu pan

  • Cut the tofu into strips and squeeze out the excess water with a kitchen towel. This step is important if you want crispy tofu in your stir-fry dish.
  • Heat the oil in a frying pan and carefully add the tofu. Fry the tofu until it is crispy and golden brown on all sides. Once the tofu is crispy, remove it and set aside.

Preparation of a stir-fry sauce

Make a sweet and spicy sauce to go with the roast.

  • In the same pan, add the garlic, ginger…

  • Also add chopped red and yellow peppers.
  • Thank you for a minute of warmth.

  • Then add the soy sauce to the pan.

  • Then add the sweet chili sauce, red pepper paste, black pepper and honey.

  • Add the water to the pan and stir.

  • Add the tofu to the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes.

  • Add the basil leaves and stir again.
  • Cook the curry for 2 minutes and enjoy warm with steamed rice, jasmine rice or sticky rice.

Which type of tofu goes best with Thai curry?

Use extra hard or firm tofu to prepare Thai curry. Because of its texture, it resembles ground beef and can absorb more flavor.

With soft tofu, it absorbs too much water and has a very different texture. For Thai tofu with basil and curry, firm tofu is best.

For this stir-fry dish I cut the tofu into small pieces, you can also slice it or crush it to make it look like grated meat.

Notes and tips for recipes

  • Basil imparts a curry flavor, so don’t substitute Thai basil for sweet basil. Thai basil gives a fresh taste to curry.
  • Try to squeeze as much water into the tofu as possible, so it will be crispy when you bake it.
  • You can make the tofu very crispy by coating it with cornstarch and then frying it in a pan. I wanted it to be gluten free, so I left that out.
  • To turn this stir-fry dish into a vegan tofu curry with Thai basil, add coconut milk to the sauce. And then we cook it. You can also add chickpeas if you like.
  • You want to spice it up a little? Add a few tablespoons of Sriracha sauce to give it a boost.

How to serve Tofu and Basil Fries

You can serve this crispy tofu fried and mixed in a spicy curry with jasmine rice or rice noodles. To make it even more delicious, you can garnish it with a crispy fried egg (if you are not a vegetarian or vegan).

The egg yolk makes the Thai curry richer and creamier. It also retains the flavor of curry and makes it a five-star dish.

How are balances kept?

This dish doesn’t take much time, so I suggest you prepare it fresh and enjoy it. But if you have leftovers, you can keep the tofu fries in the fridge for 2-3 days and reheat them in the microwave for 2 minutes.

I don’t like the taste of frozen tofu, so I don’t freeze it.

Taiwanese Tofu Basil Vegan Fries

Spicy Thai tofu, cooked in a spicy sauce. This vegetarian curry is ready in minutes and is best served with leftover rice or noodles. Prepare this spicy and tasty curry with the benefits of tofu and basil.

Instructions

  • Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan and add 300 g of tofu cut into strips. Fry the tofu until it is crispy and golden brown on all sides.
  • Once the tofu is crispy, place on a plate and set aside.
  • In the same pan, add a teaspoon of chopped garlic and an inch of grated ginger. Use fresh ginger to grate, you will get more flavor.
  • Stir for 1 minute and add 1 cup finely chopped yellow and red peppers. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes and pour in ¼ cup soy sauce.
  • Mix well with a spoon and add 2 to 3 tablespoons of paprika sauce, 2 to 3 tablespoons of red pepper paste, 1 teaspoon of black pepper and 2 tablespoons of honey.
  • Simmer the sauce over medium heat. Pour in 2 to 3 tablespoons of water and mix well.
  • Add 300 grams of crispy tofu to the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat and add ½ cup of basil leaves. Cook the curry for another 2 minutes and serve with the jasmine rice.
  • To make it more delicious, you can add slices of raw mango.

Notes and tips for recipes
