The Best Microwave Rice Recipe

If you’re in a hurry, follow our best microwave rice recipe for perfectly flavored rice in a little less time. You won’t be covering the stove with a pan, and you may not have a steamer or rice cooker.

Another reason to use the microwave is that you only make one batch of rice. It’s probably not worth buying a steamer or rice cooker for this, and some rice cookers have at least two cups, which would be too much.

So there will definitely be times when cooking rice in the microwave is the best method.

Reasons for putting rice in the microwave

  • There’s no more room on your stove.
  • You don’t have a rice cooker or you only cook a small amount.

  • They are fascinated by the way things turn and cook, apparently by magic!

Which types of rice go with this recipe?

This recipe is optimized for a new harvest jasmine rice or flavored rice, which we highly recommend for rice as a Thai main dish.

Brown rice, which is rice that still has some of its husks, needs to be cooked longer, so this recipe results in undercooked rice. You need to configure the timings and power settings.

Glutinous rice is another popular rice that requires a different recipe, which you can find here.

Sushi rice, basmati rice, and similar long-grain and medium-grain rice types probably need a little tweaking, but we haven’t tested them using the exact method described here.

Risotto rice, wild rice and other types of rice are also outside our testing parameters.

Step 1 boils water and everything goes on full power.

Word about microwave settings

Microwave ovens vary considerably in terms of power and energy consumption, so you should adjust the settings to match the power level we are using.

Many online recipes call for running the microwave on full power for x number of minutes, but this is not a good method.

First, put the water, in which the rice will be cooked, in the bottom of your microwave. Secondly, the rice is irradiated by the microwave and cooked inside, resulting in poor taste and texture.

It’s quick and easy, but it’s an unconventional method – at least all the versions we tried during testing.

The full power of our microwave (which is quite old) is 800 watts, the half power is 400 watts. Since most microwaves have adjustable power settings, you should be able to adjust them. If not, use our microwave calculator to choose the nearest available setting and adjust the time to suit your needs.

Which microwave dish to use

If you are cooking for more than one person, it is best to use a branded microwave for cooking, such as. B. The Joseph Joseph rice microwave.

These rice bowls are made of plastic (but are BPA-free), and can successfully cook a lot of rice. While there is no particular reason to cook rice in the microwave, it is easier for us to use one of the methods for steaming rice and get better results – especially if you are cooking for guests.

Anyway, this article is about making 1-2 cups of uncooked rice, which would make 2-4 cups of cooked rice and would be enough for four people.

Therefore, for such a small amount, you should use a special heat-resistant glass Pyrex bowl or a plastic microwave-safe bowl with cling film around it. Closed plastic bowls without vents swell and become pressurized, while rice cookers with lids with vents tend to release too much steam.

How to cook a rice recipe in the microwave oven

Rice has been steamed for thousands of years. During this process, hot steam passes through the grains and penetrates them completely, heating, moistening and cooking the rice. Rice absorbs water and if you use good quality grains, you will get a good, fluffy rice.

If you cook on direct heat, as many people do, you will cook the water out of the grains instead of gently steaming them. You will often be rewarded with burnt rice sticking to the bottom of the pan and a lot of trouble washing up. Worse, your rice is more likely to be soft or undercooked and unappetizing.

Microwaves cook tiny waves that magically penetrate the center of your food and cook it from the inside out, and the stronger the force, the more the inside will cook first. The result can be soft, overcooked rice or, if the rice is not strong enough, pockets of uncooked rice grains because the water has not had time to penetrate.

Most recipes call for a full serving of rice, but we found this method to be poor.

The rice releases excess starch during the first wash, resulting in a clean and much less sticky rice.

Response to successful microwave rice

We assume you already know that brown rice should be washed thoroughly under running water to remove dirt, dust and excess starch. First, rinse well to prevent a bunch of rice grains from sticking together.

When cooking on high power, the water boiled so aggressively that it came out of the bowl and left water on the bottom of the microwave and the rice, making it inedible. Cooking rice with less energy took a lot of time to boil the water and to cook at all.

The solution was to boil the water as quickly as possible and collect the steam, to mimic the steam method. Then reduce the power during the main cooking time, the water will evaporate efficiently. Then finish with a short session on low power to let the steam escape and cook the rice.

The water becomes much clearer as it is washed, but it will never be completely clear because the starch continues to be removed. That’s enough here.

Four easy steps to perfect brown rice

Step 1 Washing rice

Measure out the dry rice – 1 or 2 cups – and put it in a microwave-safe bowl. While stirring and rinsing three to four times with clean water, drain and refresh with clean water until translucent.

Step 2 Microwave Cooking Part

Add 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of water to a scoop of dry rice (2 cups plus 4 tablespoons if you are cooking 2 cups of rice) and stir gently. Close the lid with microwave foil.

Place a covered bowl in the microwave so the water boils and bubbles at the bottom of the domed packet. In our case, it took 3 minutes at 800 watts, but the goal is to cook on full power until the water reaches the bottom of the container, then stop.

Adjust as necessary for microwaves with higher or lower power and for cooking more than one cup of rice, as you will need more time to boil the water. The first phase is complete.

Make sure the rice is well covered to keep the water and steam in the bowl.

Step 3 Microwave Cooking Part 2

Once the first step is complete, remove the bowl from the microwave – it will be very hot, so be careful. Loosen the plastic wrap enough to insert a fork or spoon to stir the rice well, then close the wrap.

Be careful when removing the plastic seal as the steam escapes and is very hot, so use a cloth to protect yourself from burns. After mixing, let the rice stand for a few minutes.

Put the sealed bowl back in the microwave and cook for seven minutes at 400W (half power in our house). The power must be sufficient to maintain the shape of the plastic dome, but not so great that the water overflows. During cooking, the water is hot enough to steam the rice, while the microwave cooks the rice from the inside out.

You may need to adjust the power to get the steam but not the digestion, but you don’t need to adjust the time whether you started with 1 or 2 cups of rice!

After boiling water, mix and adjust the rice.

Step 4 Microwave Cooking Part 3

Remove the covered bowl from the microwave and remove the cling film completely, being careful not to burn yourself on the escaping steam. Mix the rice again.

At this point, the rice is almost done, but it should look a little moist, which is exactly what we want.

Leave the bowl alone for a few minutes, then put it back in the microwave for another 4 minutes at 400W (our half power).

This final cooking time ensures that the rice is done cooking, allowing most excess steam to escape and leaving a nicely cooked rice.

When the cooking time is over, remove the rice and immediately transfer it to a second serving dish, allowing the rice to breathe and the excess steam to escape.

Washing rice

Microwave oven level 2

  • Return the bowl to the microwave and cook for seven minutes at 400W. It may be necessary to adjust the power of the microwave so that the water boils, but does not overflow. The power settings depend on the microwave frequency.
  • The idea is that the water generates steam without overcooking, and the steam cooks the rice slowly enough so that it does not overcook in the middle.
  • When you are finished, remove the bowl again, but this time remove the plastic lid and throw it away. Stir in the rice and let stand for a few minutes.
